5 Tips for Traveling With Your Dog
With summer around the corner, vacation season is full speed ahead. It’s up to you if you want to travel with your dog. If you do, here are 5 tips to make it enjoyable for you both.
1. Prepare your dog for the trip
Many dogs can get car sick, so don’t feed your dog just before you leave. Feed him breakfast a few hours before you leave, and take a nice long walk so he can be tired and relaxed on the road.
2. Contact your vet
Make sure your dog is vaccinated, and ask your vet if you’ll need any vaccinations or medication. Based on where you’re going, your dog may encounter different threats, like Lyme disease.
3. Plan your route
Take regular breaks along the way so your dog can pee and get some exercise. A good rule of thumb is 10-30 minutes every 3-4 hours. You could do a Google search for dog parks along the way to give your dog some playtime with other pooches, too.
4. Find pet-friendly hotels
Not all accommodations accept pets, from hotels and campsites to Airbnbs to relatives’ houses. Make sure you call ahead of time to see if they allow animals.
5. Crate your dog
Did you know the safest way for your dog to travel is in a crate? It protects your dog in case of a crash, and gives him a comfortable and familiar place to sleep once you get to your destination.
Enjoy your summer and have fun traveling with your dog!
